A FORMER member of Friends of Wattle Park has called on the state government to replace a W-Class tram destroyed by vandals.
Doris Backman, 86, of Burwood, also called for better security to protect the historic tramways park. Last week Parks Victoria removed the remains of a tram that was burned on Boxing Day. One
W-Class tram, used as a shelter, remains.
The trams were replaced in 2007 following previous fires and vandalism.
Ms Backman, who has lived opposite Wattle Park for 54 years, said Friends of Wattle Park had been involved in securing heritage recognition for the trams and other buildings at the park in 1981.
She blamed Parks Victoria for failing to protect the tram from vandals. ‘‘We fought for this park for future generations. What about the children? What about their future?’’ she said.
Ms Backman appealed to Burwood MLA Graham Watt to replace the tram and to fight for better security in the area to protect the remaining tram.
Mr Watt said he was in talks with the relevant government departments and hoped to secure a positive outcome for Ms Backman and the Burwood community.
Parks Victoria acting chief ranger Kylie Trott said a replacement tram would be considered. “Many park visitors have fond memories of the trams at Wattle Park.
“We are looking at options and funding for a replacement tram, as well as some upgrades that we might be able to make to the remaining tram to reduce vandalism in the future.”
